Arlington Yard
Staten Island, NY

Built in 1904 by the B&O Railroad, Arlington Yard served as the rail freight gateway to Staten Island and Long Island. A bridge called AK-1 over the Arthur Kill connects Staten Island to the national rail network, and carfloat bridges on the North Shore allowed rail cars to move between Staten Island and Brooklyn. Now, the North Shore Line of the Staten Island Railway is abandoned and Arlington Yard lies unused. Most of the yard tracks are grown over by 25-year-old trees, while just a handful of tracks have been maintained in the last five years. Maintenance of the yard probably went in hand with the revival of interocean shipping at Howland Hook Marine Terminal. Still, it may be years before a CSX train pulls frieght over AK-1 again.
