Kawasaki Railcar Plant
Yonkers, NY
It's 2001 and the age of the Redbirds was drawing to a close. Every
week, new deliveries of R142 subway cars from Bombardier and Kawasaki
were made to NYCT. For Kawasaki, the R142A cars were assembled in
their Heavy Industries plant in Osaka, Japan, then shipped over to
the Stetes. However, the cars are not yet ready for service. After
the cars were unloaded at Port Newark in New Jersey, they were put
on road wheels and individually pulled like wagons by trucks over
the G.W. Bridge over to the Yonkers Plant. Here, American Kawasaki
workers performed the final assembly and attached the bogies to the
body units. The facility also has a small off-network yard where cars
are tested. This yard is partially electrified by overhead AC catenary.
Finished subway cars were delivered by flatbed trucks to various Subdivision
A NYCT yards.
