McCarren Pool
Brooklyn, NY

Robert Moses would be weeping if he saw his once-magnificent McCarren Pool look the was it does today. Opened in 1936, the pool was one of the largest public pools ever built, and retains that status to this day. In 1979, the city approved spending $100 million to rebuild the pool, but the plan was rejected by the Community Board. In 1983, McCarren Pool closed it's gates for the last time. Now, the pool and bathouse building has become a graffiti practice ground of sorts and is deteriorating at a fast rate. Numerous attempts at keeping people out resulted in a chain link fence virtually composed of patches and the most fearsome barbed wire and razor ribbon obstacles I've ever seen in a park. Despite its current state, there still is hope for developing the pool into something the community would benefit from. For more information on the proposed projects, check out www.poolproject.org.
